Isshinryu Karate or the “One Heart Method” was founded by Tatsuo Shimabuku.  Master Shimabuku formed Isshinryu based on his training in Shorinryu, Gojuryu, and Kobudo and taught his style to U.S. Marines in Okinawa during the Korean War.

Isshinryu has a rich history in WA State.  One of Shimabuku’s best students, Steve Armstrong, opened one of the first karate schools in America on South Tacoma Way in Tacoma, WA.  Master Armstrong trained many students to black belt, including Shihan Robert Edwards (Tacoma, WA).  Shihan Edwards was the most winning sport karate competitor in the history of Northwest Isshinryu, and is still an active sensei.

Isshinryu Karate is easily recognizable by its vertical fist punching and moderate stances.  Isshinryu training provides excellent hard-style basics including: low straight kicks, straight punching and solid arm blocking.  Isshinryu training also includes traditional hand and weapons kata.
